WTM 2014 celebrated its 35th anniversary as countries from all corners of the globe participated in a major exhibition, with one of four days extended to feature specific destinations as part of ‘WTM Festivals’.

Throughout the show, exhibitors showcased aspects of culture and heritage on their stands.  These included dance performances from Indonesia, traditional handicraft demonstrations from Abu Dhabi, and cuisine and hospitality from California to Peru, and Hungary to Malta.

Sweets from Oman as well as coffee and dates from Saudi Arabia were served according to traditional custom, while on the award-winning Ecuador stand, chefs prepared fresh chocolate treats to sample.

Handmade gingerbread cookies on the Slovakia stand were just one of the highlights amongst the crowd, where I overheard a visitor appreciate the goulash as the best he had ever tasted.

Luxury chocolate from Belgium served as a sweet reminder of my visit to Brussels, whose tourism representatives I met earlier this year at Arabian Travel Market in Dubai.

Visitors were attracted to falcon displays and culinary demonstrations on the Dubai stand, where exhibitors such as Mall of the Emirates, Crowne Plaza Dubai and Big Bus Tours briefed me on their core advantages.

Sharjah, as Capital of Islamic Culture 2014 and Capital of Arab Tourism 2015, promoted a rich cultural calendar that includes the Sharjah Biennial and Festival of Light.

More than 200 events took place during WTM 2014, including seminars covering specialist topics such as blogger collaboration, tourism to and from China and changes in the airline industry.

A key area of the exhibition was dedicated to travel technology, with several conferences in which industry experts discussed online strategies to enhance business in travel and hospitality.
